Recompense or Experiment - River Oaks Classic - Recap

Scott R Chilcutt, Edmond, OK (August 13, 2011)  Handicapped by their handicaps, Snead and Jones flight players always tend to appear in the last groups on the tee pairing sheets.  After feedback from some of the players we looked at a spot that we might experiment with changing things around and the River Oaks Classic seemed to be the best spot.

Last year at the same event, scheduled for the same time of year, with the same starting time and 10 less players, darkness called the event for the Snead Flight.   So in a way we wanted to recompense those loyal players while at the same time checking the results.  And did they change, with the first group finishing in 3:42 minutes the field behind had a hard time keeping up.   At conclusion of the day all groups but the final two were met with under 4:30 minute rounds and even those two groups were just over that time.

While that experiment proved successful, it probably won't change all the events, but we are sure it'll change up things at some venues in the future. For now it was simply a token of appreciation for those players in higher handicapped flights that have had to fight the darkness at some events.

Michael Hicks from Edmond, OK picked up his first Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Labor Finders.

RESULTS:

Palmer Flight:  Roland Lewis from Tulsa picked up his 4th win of the season with a steady 6 over par 77.  Lewis played out the final nine holes in one over par to finish three strokes ahead of Yukon, OK player Joseph Hendrix.  Hendrix, with two wins in his last two attempts, couldn't over come a nine on his third hole to continue the streak.  Recently qualifying for the National Championship with a third place finish at the TPC Sawgrass Open, Allen Sawvel from Broken Arrow, OK rounded out the top three.

Hogan Flight:    Travis Klein of Del City, OK overcame a rocky front nine to shoot one under par on the back to take it to extra holes with Tulsa, OK player Todd Chapman, both shooting 4 over par 77's.  Chapman would go 2 for 2 in playoffs this year besting Klein on the first extra hole for his third win of the year.  Hogan Flight points leader, Kirby Rogers from Muldrow, OK would finish third, two strokes ahead of newcomer, 14 year old Ethan Smith of Oklahoma City marking his second 4th place finish.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Edmond, OK member Michael Hicks shot his career low round five over par only to find himself in a playoff with Bruce Callich from Checotah, OK.  Callich would start with a double bogey, bounced back with consistent play finishing the back nine two over par to get a chance at the title but Hicks prevailed for his 2nd win of the season.  Oklahoma City resident Randy Sullivan went on a birdie barrage on the back with three in four holes, ended up one stroke back of the playoff.

Sarazen Flight:  Taking a break from the Am Tour since his back to back second place Major finishes at the Texas Masters at TPC San Antonio  and Western Open  at TPC Scottsdale, Sayre OK, player Robert Lakey looks to have made the best of his time off.  Despite a quad on the 6th hole, Lakey grabbed his first win of the year by two strokes over Dallas tour member Ricky Gates from Arlington, TX and three strokes over fellow Dallas traveler Gabriel Brisco of Mesquite, TX.

Jones Flight:  In his first win since a promotion from the Snead Flight, Blanchard, OK first year tour member, Jerime Parker snatched his fourth trophy of the year by four strokes over Lewisville, TX traveler Ron Hardy and Gary Chrisman from Yukon, OK.

Snead Flight:    Rick Henthorn from Yukon, OK picked up his second win of the year with a career low round sixteen over par 87.  Edmond, OK member, Mike Camp finished in the 2nd spot.
