Forest Ridge Classic - Recap

Fall of 2010 Improvements Makes an Old Time Favorite Better!
Scott R Chilcutt, Broken Arrow, OK (April 16, 2011)  Just a few short weeks after our 2010 Forest Ridge Classic the course would close down for the fall to do a makeover.  Greens and sand traps were all redone and water features added along with some rerouted cart paths.  What that makeover did was tweak an already great venue for the Am Tour.  Breezy north winds, however, were not part of that plan.  Oklahoma courses are, after all, designed for the prevailing south winds, the northerlies would add to the challenge but after Friday’s hurricane like day, the challenge was very pedestrian.
Watts, OK Joe Bonaparte would take home the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Labor Finders in his first outing on the tour.
Results:
Championship Flight:  One stroke down to Tulsa's Brad Christianson after 14 holes, rookie Jeff Boyer from Oklahoma City, birdied the 15th to even up the score where they would finish at 5 over par 77.  Playoff excitement would ensue, Christianson would dodge a first hole bullet after Boyer's five foot birdie put would 360 out of the hole but in the end Brad would drain a birdie putt on the third hole to take his 2nd win in as many attempts and the finish would be Boyer's 2nd runner up spot in three rounds on the season.  Sapulpa's Curt Howard would birdie the last three of four holes but couldn't over come doubles on the 4th and 10th holes rounded out the top three.
Palmer Flight:   Allen Sawvel from Broken Arrow would breakthrough for his first win by three strokes after starting the season with 2nd and 3rd place finishes.  Second time player, Norman's Bill McConnell  went even par over the final three holes to stay ahead of Darren Montgomery from Oklahoma City finishing in the third spot for the third time this year.  Muskogee's D'Wayne Lowery parred the final two holes to tie up the 4th spot with David McDaniel from Broken Arrow.
Hogan Flight:   By this time last year, Stillwater's Ryan Cummings had two wins in his first three tournaments on the tour.  Minor detail, those wins were in the Jones Flight, after a voluntary move to Sarazen later in the year and ultimately a mandatory move to the Hogan after the National Championship.  This is Ryans first win in six attempts as a newly promoted Hogan.  Tim Mathis from Edmond, took his second 2nd place finish after rehabbing from shoulder surgery at Christmas time.  Muldrow's Kirby Rogers would finish the final 4 holes in even par to knot up the 3rd position with Brook Lister from Tulsa.
Senior Hogan Flight:  Only three strokes were the difference in the first four spots, where first time player, Joe Bonaparte from Watts would edge out another first time player Siloam Springs, Ronald Haddock.  Oklahoma City's Randy Sullivan captured a third place spot, after winning his first time out at the Kickinbird Classic by a stroke over Mike Johnson from Tahlequah.
Sarazen Flight:   Van Buren, AR player Jay Williams took his 2nd win in consecutive Saturday's over Bethanys Scott Word by one stroke.  Word finished one stroke clear of Stan Wilson of Jones and new member and first time player, California native David Price from Pawhuska rounded out the field.
Jones Flight:  Recently retiring from Dallas Tour Offical duties, Loyd Welch from McAlester seems to have made the best of his spare time going 6 over par on the back nine to shoot an 87, seven strokes clear of Yukons Gary ChrismanRon Hardy from Lewisville rounded out the top three.
Snead FlightThird year player, Nathan Elwood from Jones took his first win of his career by two strokes over newcomer Jerime Parker from Blanchard.  Yukons Rick Henthorn continued his top finishing ways.  Henthorn, in seven events on the 2011 points year has only finished out of the top 3 once, while in Hawaii for his Daughters wedding.

Callaway Order of Merit Points

What does the Callaway Order of Merit Points mean to me?

Scott R Chilcutt, Edmond, OK (April 12, 2011)  The Callaway Order of Merit Points and ultimate Champion have a number of meanings on the National level, but also the local level.

First some changes from the past. The AM Tour previously had a policy that you could only accumulate points equal to the number of tournaments in your local tour.   So for arguments sake, Oklahoma had 12 but you played in 24, you would only accumulate points of the BEST 12 events.   That was a MANUAL process and many local directors didn't go through that process.

In order to standardize that across the country that policy was changes this year and is part of the player handbook that you can download the HERE.

Tour Players may compete in as many tournaments as they choose, however, only the best 8 finishes will count for the Callaway Order of Merit race in order to identify the player who is having the best season, per flight. For example, Tour Player A plays in 10 tournaments of 11+ players and finishes in 3rd place each time (10 tournaments x 100 points). Tour Player A will have accrued 1000 total points, but his total for the Callaway Order of Merit would be 800 points (8 x 100 is 800 points).

At a National Level the winner from each flight on our local tour qualifies for the National Championship and is placed in the Callaway Order of Merit Qualifier status.  Winning at the Nationals now takes on new meaning as winning the Tour Staff Package brings bundle of prizes.

On the Local Level with sponsorship from Edward Jones in Sapulpa, OK we will present a customized Callaway Staff Bag to each player taking the flight championship.  One exception to the rule above is that the 8 tournaments points will come from the Oklahoma tournaments only.

Emerald Falls Championship - Recap

Tunnel To Trouble

Scott R Chilcutt, Broken Arrow, OK (April 2, 2011)   After a one year abscense by the Golf Channel Am Tour from the Emerald Falls Golf Club, those familiar were reminded and those new to the layout were educated on the tunnel that joins the course by the South 305th East Avenue division.  Heading west is trouble, but after you've finished the batch of holes the east bound ride is welcome.

The first three holes of the championship, par 72 layout tend to give you a false sense of security, then when you head back towards the clubhouse the 4th hole picks up in difficutly, but nothing like the drive around the pond at 18 and under the street to meet the 5,6,7 and 8th holes.  Of the four holes only 1 birdie was carded out of the 42 golfers and in that stretch the stroke average was 1.825 over par.  The 8th hole was the toughest playing 2.48 strokes over par and in the 4 holes over 54% of the scores were double bogie or higher.

Kirby Rogers picked up the Tournament Championship Trophy, presented by Labor Finders wth a net 72.  Rogers weathered the 4th -7th holes with pars but found trouble with a triple on 8th.

Next UP - Forest Ridge Classic - April 18th, The Open at Rose Creek - April 30th.
