Cowboy Classic - Stillwater, Oklahoma

Scott R Chilcutt, Stillwater, OK (June 21, 2014)   Lakeside Golf Course in Stillwater, Oklahoma, the former home to the collegiate power house, Oklahoma State Golf Team played host to the Cowboy Classic on the Golf Channel AM Tour Oklahoma schedule.

Blessed with late spring rains, the track welcomed the members to some challenging, but fair scoring opportunities.  Senior Hogan member, Tim Mathis of Edmond, OK may have struggled on the day, but took advantage of the down wind, par 5 - 13th for an Albatross 2 draining his approach shot from 140 yards.

Gary Hayes from the Sarazen Flight played a Srixon ball and made the best of the Srixon ball promotion.  Hayes will receive a dozen of their choice, for winning flight. Playing in Hogan Flight, Caleb Brown, took home the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving, two strokes clear of Ron Walker.

RESULTS:

Palmer Flight:  In his second event on tour, Rick Olson of Tulsa, OK started the day with a birdie and ended the day with the same, en route to his first tour win.  Four strokes back,  Edmond, OK member, Richard Cordis struggled a bit on the back nine, but carded three birdies for his best finish on tour. William Mccord of Odessa, TX also notched his best finish on tour, in his first season with the help of a birdie on the par 4 - 4th hole, rounding out the top three.

Hogan Flight:  With a daughter making the move to the OSU campus in the Fall, Dallas Tour member, Caleb Brown of Lewisville, TX made double duty of the trip.  Brown, with four birdies on the day, recorded his lowest round on tour, picking up his sixth win and second of the season.  Joe Deere of Catoosa, OK, looking for his third win on the year and National Championship qualification, fell just three strokes back, with three birdies on the day for the runner up finish.  Coming off of recent surgery, Shawn Whitaker, another Dallas Tour member from Lewisville, TX made his presence in Stillwater known with a third place finish.

Senior Hogan Flight:  A previous winner in Stillwater, just down the road at the Stillwater Country Club, Bud Surber of Edmond, OK picked up his Senior National Championship Qualification with three wins on the year and seven on tour.  It took a birdie on the final hole, the par 3 - 18th for the Championship, edging out Oklahoma City, OK resident Art Wiles by a stroke.  Wiles, with two birdies on the day, stayed ahead of first time, Edmond, OK player, Robert Laylock rounding out the top three.

Sarazen Flight:  Gary Hayes of Chickasha, OK picked up his first win on tour just under a month ago at the Oklahoma City Championship and made it two for two.  The quarter playing Hayes, donned in Oklahoma State apparel, went out in +3 and came to the clubhouse with just one stroke to spare.  Harry Smith, with two birdies on the day, knotted up the runner up finish with recent Western Open finisher, Gary Schuessler of Wichita, just one stroke out of the lead.

Jones Flight:  Crescent, OK resident, Ron Walker, became the second player of the day to secure his Senior National Championship qualification with his third win on the year and seventh on tour.  Walker duplicated his front nine / back nine scores to win with five strokes to spare over runner up,  Scott Brown of Oklahoma City, OK.  Brown took eleven strokes off his front nine score on the back to edge out fellow Oklahoma City player Chris Manahan for the runner up spot,

Hard Rock Open - Cherokee Hills - 2014

Am Tour Staff, Catoosa, OK ( June 7, 2014)  The Hard Rock Open, took a hiatus from the Oklahoma Tour in 2013, and returned to remind players of what they missed.  Cherokee Hills Golf Club, opened the tee boxes in 1924, designed by Perry Maxwell and originally called Indian Hills Golf Club.  When the Cherokee Nation purchased the course with plans to build a casino and hotel complex they hired Tripp Davis to modify the layout.  Tweaking a few holes, rerouting some others, while trying to keep the original feel of the Maxwell design, Davis created a challenge like not many others.

High chances of rain from the meteorological world helped the skies clear up on Saturday morning, led to warm muggy conditions that didn't help the scores on the devilish layout.   Clayton Badger, a Palmer Flight player,  picked up the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:     20 year old, Tanner Hughes of Tulsa, OK got off to a rough start. Finally starting to get a feel for the greens on the back nine, Huges birdies the par 4 - 10th to finish the back nine in + 3 for his first win on tour.  Fellow Tulsa, OK resident, Charles Bassett made par on his final three holes to finish four strokes back.

Palmer Flight:   Clayton Badger of Drumright, OK led most of the round, when Holiday Island, AR player Allen Huffman got back to within one shot with the help of birdies on the par 4 - 10th and par 3 - 16th.  Huffman would end up three putting the final hole to match Badgers bogie on 18 finishing one stroke out of the lead.   The win was Badgers's third on tour and first since the August 2012 Cowboy Classic - Stillwater Country Club.  Brandon McCool of Edmond, OK, a winner in his last time out, rounded out the top three.

Hogan Flight:    Catoosa, OK local, Joe Deere made the best of his many trips around the Cherokee Hills layout to pick up his fourth win on tour and second of the season.  Deere took eight strokes off his front nine score on the back to finish four strokes up on Rod Haddock of Claremore, OK.  Visiting Arkansas Tour member, Ron Stratton of Bella Vista, AR finished in the third spot.

Sarazen Flight:   Kerry Greer of Oklahoma City, OK birdied the par 4 - 18th to force an extra hole sudden death playoff with fellow Oklahoma City resident, Eddie Bennifield.  Back to the course, Greer prevailed with a bogie on the first extra hole for his second win on tour. Bennifield, relegated to the runner up finish, his best on his first year on tour, finished two strokes clear of Jerime Parker of Blanchard, OK.

Jones Flight:  Course management, while staying away from the three putts, put Scott Brown of Oklahoma City, OK in the winners circle for the second time in as many attempts.  Rogers, AR player Carl Imhof made par on his final hole to bring it to within one for his fourth runner up finish on the season.  Glenpool, OK native, Bobby Deaton now residing in Holiday Island, AR birdied the par 5 - 6th hole to round out the top three.
