Oklahoma Tour Championship

Scott R Chilcutt, Shawnee, OK (August 9,2014)   The 2014 Oklahoma Tour Championship made its way to Shawnee OK, just east of Oklahoma City for another look at Shawnee Country Club. Nice summer temperatures, went along with previous July rains to set the course up for an Oklahoma Tour final we can normally only dream of.

In addition to the normal Flight Champion trophies and prizes, 2014 Points Champions were awarded a Srixon Staff Golf Bag that will be embroidered with their name and Flight Champion designation, presented by Financial Adviser, Curt Howard and his Edward Jones office in Sapulpa, OK.

Players from Kansas City to the Dallas Area, joined the Oklahoma Tour members for National and Senior National Championship aspirations as well as Player of the Year Standings.  Rik Wall, Championship Flight took advantage of the Srixon Golf Ball Challenge and will get another dozen shipped to him, while Brandon McCool picked up the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:   Rik Wall of Plano, TX set out on his first of a two day, two tour weekend and started fast. Wall, a late membership entry on tour is trying to work himself into National Championship eligibility and qualification.  Birdies on the par 4 - 1st and par 4 - 9th, set him up for two more on the back nine to finish at -2 with an 8 stroke victory, his first on tour.  Friendly rivals, Checotah, OK player James Fowler, off the tour most of the year with lingering back problems and Curt Howard of Sapulpa, OK went to the final hole, all square.  And that's where they ended up, but not after 15'+ putts by both for bogie ended the day the way they started, even.

Palmer Flight:   Edmond, OK member,  Brandon McCool carded an eagle on the par 5 - 8th, added four birdies on the day and finished at even par 71 for his second win on tour.  Six strokes back,  Jimmy Westfall a former member of the Shawnee Country Club, when it was simply nine holes, stayed mostly out of trouble, added a birdie at the par 4 -11th to pick up the runner up finish.  Burleson, TX traveler, Duane Dunton birdied his seventeenth hole of the day to knot up the third place honors with Ronnie Draper of Oklahoma City, OK.

Hogan Flight:   Joe Deere of Catoosa, OK, on a mission to get to the National Championship did everything he needed, with birdies on the par 4 - 4th and par 4 - 11th, Deere, picked up his third win on the season to punch his ticket to Scottsdale.  Three strokes back, Springfield, MO player Chad Schuchmann, making the trip for the Player of the Year bag, finally got on track with a birdie on the par 5 - 18th for the second place finish with Imran Siddiqi of Edmond, OK rounding out the top three.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Long time member from Sayre, OK, Robert Lakey made eagle on the par 5 - 13th to go along with birdies on the par 3 - 2nd and par 3 - 12th for his best finish on the season and third win on tour.  One stroke back, Rod Haddock of Claremore, OK made par on his final five holes to jump into the runner up spot with Edmond, OK member Bud Surber taking the third place finish.

Sarazen Flight:  Dejected with his game after playing in a hot pairing at the Challenge at the LakeRoger Pappan of Ponca City, OK came out swinging.  Pappan, went two under par over his first five holes with birdies on the par 4 - 3rd and par 4 - 5th, added one on the back at the par 5 - 13th to pick up his first victory on tour with a three stroke margin.  Scott Ingerson of Oklahoma City, OK, a winner early in the season on the Dallas Tour at the St Patty's Day Challenge @ Lantana carded the runner up spot with Edmond, OK member Christian Williamson recording a couple of birdies on his back nine to pick up the show position finish.

Jones Flight:  Scott Brown of Oklahoma City, OK capped off his first year on tour with four wins in his last six outings including a National Championship qualification third place finish at the Texas Masters at Barton Creek.  One stroke back, with three birdies on the day, Dallas Tour traveler,  Larry Tolson of Fairview, TX finished in the runner up spot with a four stroke advantage.  The pair of Chris Manahan of Oklahoma City, OK and Shawnee, OK local, Doug Watson split the third place honors.

On The Lake - Oklahoma City

Scott R Chilcutt, Oklahoma City, OK (July 20, 2014)  Lake Levels and excellent course conditions were a direct indication of an abnormally wet and cool July for the first Oklahoma Tour event contested on the Lake Hefner Golf Club, North Course.  Greens rolling true after a great deal of play earlier in the day, helped with some excellent scoring conditions, despite some fairly stout winds.

Richard Cordis from the Palmer Flight and Gary Schuessler from the Sarazen Flight played a Srixon ball and made the best of the Srixon ball promotion. Gary Schuessler, took home the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving, four strokes clear of Keil Hicks.

RESULTS:

Palmer Flight:  After 2nd, 3rd and 4th place finishes on the local schedule, first year player Richard Cordis of Edmond, OK finally broke through to the win column.  Cordis, one stroke back on the front nine, birdied the par 4 - 13th and came to the clubhouse in even par on the back for a one stroke victory. Rick Olson from Tulsa, OK, a winner at the June, Cowboy Classic - Lakeside carded his second straight runner up finish with Senior Palmer Flight points leader, Jimmy Westfall of Oklahoma City, OK rounding out the top three.

Hogan Flight:    Tim Mathis of Edmond, OK played the front nine in +1 with the help of back to back birdies on the par 5 - 4th and par 4 - 5th, stumbled early on the back, but finished out with a birdie on the par 5 - 18th for his third win on the season and tenth win on tour.  Two strokes back, Sayre, OK member, Robert Lakey birdied the par 5 - 4th for the runner up honors with Art Wiles of Oklahoma City, OK rounding out the top three.

Sarazen Flight:   Wichita, KS resident, Gary Schuessler having arguably his best year on tour, went, as he put it, "unconscious" for 18 holes to shoot a career low round, even par.  Schuessler, with two previous wins on the season and an impressive runner up finish at the June Western Open Major in Scottsdale, AZ carded four birdies on the day for a four stroke advantage.  Playing alongside Schuessler, Kiel Hicks of Jenks, OK played his best round on tour with two birdies for the runner up finish with Oklahoma City, OK tour member Scott Ingerson also trying to keep up with three birdies of his own and the third place honors.

Jones Flight:   Scott Brown of Oklahoma City, OK trailed Yukon, OK resident Rick Henthorn by four strokes on the front nine, but got his stride on the back.  Brown, came to the club house with three birdies on the back nine and an even par 36 to win his third event on his first year on tour. Four strokes back,  fellow Oklahoma City member Chris Manahan, a winner his last time out at the Owasso Championship took home the second place finish with Edmond, OK member Mike Camp rounding out the top three.

Hard Rock Open - Cherokee Hills - 2014

Am Tour Staff, Catoosa, OK ( June 7, 2014)  The Hard Rock Open, took a hiatus from the Oklahoma Tour in 2013, and returned to remind players of what they missed.  Cherokee Hills Golf Club, opened the tee boxes in 1924, designed by Perry Maxwell and originally called Indian Hills Golf Club.  When the Cherokee Nation purchased the course with plans to build a casino and hotel complex they hired Tripp Davis to modify the layout.  Tweaking a few holes, rerouting some others, while trying to keep the original feel of the Maxwell design, Davis created a challenge like not many others.

High chances of rain from the meteorological world helped the skies clear up on Saturday morning, led to warm muggy conditions that didn't help the scores on the devilish layout.   Clayton Badger, a Palmer Flight player,  picked up the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:     20 year old, Tanner Hughes of Tulsa, OK got off to a rough start. Finally starting to get a feel for the greens on the back nine, Huges birdies the par 4 - 10th to finish the back nine in + 3 for his first win on tour.  Fellow Tulsa, OK resident, Charles Bassett made par on his final three holes to finish four strokes back.

Palmer Flight:   Clayton Badger of Drumright, OK led most of the round, when Holiday Island, AR player Allen Huffman got back to within one shot with the help of birdies on the par 4 - 10th and par 3 - 16th.  Huffman would end up three putting the final hole to match Badgers bogie on 18 finishing one stroke out of the lead.   The win was Badgers's third on tour and first since the August 2012 Cowboy Classic - Stillwater Country Club.  Brandon McCool of Edmond, OK, a winner in his last time out, rounded out the top three.

Hogan Flight:    Catoosa, OK local, Joe Deere made the best of his many trips around the Cherokee Hills layout to pick up his fourth win on tour and second of the season.  Deere took eight strokes off his front nine score on the back to finish four strokes up on Rod Haddock of Claremore, OK.  Visiting Arkansas Tour member, Ron Stratton of Bella Vista, AR finished in the third spot.

Sarazen Flight:   Kerry Greer of Oklahoma City, OK birdied the par 4 - 18th to force an extra hole sudden death playoff with fellow Oklahoma City resident, Eddie Bennifield.  Back to the course, Greer prevailed with a bogie on the first extra hole for his second win on tour. Bennifield, relegated to the runner up finish, his best on his first year on tour, finished two strokes clear of Jerime Parker of Blanchard, OK.

Jones Flight:  Course management, while staying away from the three putts, put Scott Brown of Oklahoma City, OK in the winners circle for the second time in as many attempts.  Rogers, AR player Carl Imhof made par on his final hole to bring it to within one for his fourth runner up finish on the season.  Glenpool, OK native, Bobby Deaton now residing in Holiday Island, AR birdied the par 5 - 6th hole to round out the top three.

SKINS:

Giant Skins:   2 -- Rick Olson, Tulsa, OK. 1 -- Allen Huffman, Holiday Island, AR; Clayton Badger, Drumright, OK; Kerry Greer, Oklahoma City, OK; Jerime Parker, Blanchard, OK; Steve Nufer, Dodge City, KS.

Championship / Palmer / Hogan:   2 -- Rick Olson, Tulsa, OK. 1 -- Brandon McCool, Edmond, OK; Allen Huffman, Holiday Island, AR; Clayton Badger, Drumright, OK.

Lincoln Park - Oklahoma City Championship

Scott R Chilcutt, Oklahoma City, OK (May 17, 2014)  The Oklahoma Tour made a return visit to Lincoln Park Golf Course in Northeast Oklahoma City for the first time since 2009.

The West Course, opened in 1921 has had a series of four clubhouses since opening with the most recent torn down last fall for a brand new facility scheduled to open in the fall of 2014.  Behind schedule from the winter, traversing from the parking lot to the course was a challenge, but it was obvious the course maintenance staff hasn't skipped a beat, with good course conditions.

Shooting a record low round, Brandon McCool of Edmond, OK took home the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving

RESULTS:

Palmer Flight:  Edmond, OK tour member Brandon McCool came out swinging after playing his way into a flight promotion at the end of 2013. Sarazen Flight:  Gary Hayes of Chickasha, OK, a late entry into the event with a schedule change made the best of the situation.  Hayes, went two under par over five holes in the middle of the round on three birdies and closed out his first win on tour by a single stroke. Muldrow, OK player Kirby Rogers sharing a cart with Hayes, made par on the final hole, but couldn't overcome a two stroke deficit on the front, picking up his second runner up finish in as many attempts.  Jerime Parker of Blanchard, OK, with a birdie on the par 4 - 8th hole finished in the show position for his second time of the points season.

Jones Flight:  Oklahoma City, OK resident, Scott Brown, only breaking the century mark twice in nine rounds on tour, added another one in a big way.  With three birdies on the day, Brown, shot a +8 -79 for his first win on tour, five strokes clear of a pair of players knotted in the runner up spot.  Ron Walker of Crescent, OK played his final four holes in -1 to share the second place honors with Edmond, OK member Mike Camp.
