The final round at the Doral Classic created some of the most dramatic results seen on Tour all year: playoffs in the Jones, Senior Palmer, Sarazen, Hogan, and Palmer flights. The Blue Monster and the Great White courses proved to be a challenge for the Golf Channel Amateur Tour players and did not lend itself to one type of player over another which led to a closely contested tournament that provided nine come-from-behind champions. Great competition is the name of the game on the Golf Channel Amateur Tour as nine of the eleven flights were determined by two or less strokes.
None was more exciting than the Palmer flight which went to a two-hole playoff between Anthony Guagliardo from Tampa, Florida and former New York Yankee pitcher Orlando “ El Duque” Hernandez from Miami, Florida. Hernandez birdied the second playoff hole to beat Guagliardo just before afternoon storms rolled in. As he arrived for the awards ceremony he commented, “This is better than winning the World Series; you don’t know how hard golf is,” as he grabbed and hugged the trophy and then gave it a victory kiss for his first Major win on the Golf Channel Amateur Tour.
Senior Palmer Flight: Hank Darcey from Oklahoma City, OK won the Senior Palmer flight as he overcame a three-shot deficit to get into a three-way playoff with 2011 Puerto Rico Open Champion Peter Sorrentino and 2010 World Golf Village Champion Ernest Young. Darcey beat Young after Sorrentino was eliminated on the first playoff hole.
