Just as players began making their way to the first tee for the event, the 30% chance of rain forecasted for the day turned into an all out thunderstorm. Lightning stopped the warm up sessions and play on the golf course in front of our groups while winds toppled the starters table. Reminiscent of weather delays earlier in the week at the 113th US Open, patient traveling players, some from as close as the 11th fairway, but others from as far as Tulsa, Texas and Kansas held out hope that the event could happen as planned. Two hours later, the skies cleared, electricity in the area vanished and play would start on a somewhat softened course.
Two of the flights were won by players that had never traversed the tricky layout while local Edmond, OK player Imran Siddiqi would shoot a career low round to win the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving. One stroke back, 11th fairway homeowner John Montazzoli narrowly missed the prize.
RESULTS:
Palmer Flight: One of those never to have seen the course, Hank Darcey from Oklahoma City, OK, took advantage of a potentially conservative approach to win his fifth tournament on Tour. Darcey went out in +1 and with the exception of two bogie's on the first two holes of the back nine finished with a +3 for a four stroke advantage over a pair tied up in the second spot. Local resident John Montazzoli and Edmond, OK player Dave Kirby shared the second place honors.
Hogan Flight: First time player, Mikayla Rosser from Broken Arrow, OK, on her way to the University of Arkansas, Fort Smith in the fall went out in + 4 - 40 to lead the gentlemen by a stroke. Troubles on the undulating 15th green opened the door for Broken Arrow member Allen Sawvel, with a birdie on the par 5 -18th to secure his third win on tour and first of the year. First year member Jason Thomas of Yukon, OK parred the final hole to share the second place finish with Rosser.
Senior Hogan Flight: Hank Chang of Lawton, OK birdied the par 3 - 7th and par 5 - 9th to edge out his fifth win on tour and first of the year. Edmond, OK member Michael Hicks went out in +1, with a birdie on the par 4 - 8th, but hit a wall on the back nine to let Cheyenne, OK member, Allan Barnett of Cheyenne, OK, on his way to North Dakota for business, slide into a tie for the second place finish.
Sarazen Flight: Imran Siddiqi an Edmond, OK resident loaded up the walking cart and headed down the middle in lieu of the cart path only conditions. Starting off the day with two doubles and and triple on the front nine, Siddiqi played the back nine in even par, on two birdies to sweep the field by three strokes. Gary Hayes of Chickasha, OK, with two birdies of his own, overcame the tour directors presence on the par 5 -9th to record his second runner up finish on the year. Lefty, Gary Schuessler of Wichita, KS rounded out the top three, three strokes back.
Senior Sarazen Flight: Jones, OK traveler, Stan "The Man" Wilson cruised to the course in his very nice red SS El Camino to pick up his sixth win on tour and second on the year. Three strokes back, Vincent Gonzalez of Oklahoma City, OK tied his best finish at the 2013 Kickingbird Challenge to stay ahead of traveling Dallas Tour member Scott Sears of Carrollton, TX by five strokes.
Jones Flight: Lobbying for a move to the Snead Flight just four weeks ago, Yukon, OK member Kyle Kuykendall picked up his second win on tour by two strokes. Traveling Dallas Tour member Robert Glittenberg from Rowlett, TX overcame a tough start on both nines to finish in the second spot two strokes clear of the pair of K.C. Montgomery from Fairview, OK and Yukon, OK member Gary Chrisman sharing the third place honors.
