Emerald Falls and the Evil Five - Emerald Falls Championship

Scott R Chilcutt, June 30, 2012 (Broken Arrow, OK) Emerald Falls Golf Club on the east side of Broken Arrow, OK has played to some interesting Oklahoma Tour battles.  On this Saturday, while the heat dome over the South Central US keeps building, the wind and humidity may have had the biggest effect on the Tour Players from Arkansas to Central Texas.  The humidity, somewhat man made with extreme course watering was only part of the story, that same water slowed things down considerably on the fairways, in the rough and especially on the greens.

After a somewhat gentile start on the East side four hole buildup of the par 72 layout the players cross under South 305th East Avenue to a different world.  Holes 5-8 played almost double the over par rank of the entire course.  #8, the #3 handicap hole played a 1.84 over par on the day with only 3 pars across the field. With a docile par three 9th the field headed back under the street to find a tough par 4 -10th hole to finish the evil five.  John Kang from Enid, OK won the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Labor Finders in a score card playoff over Edmond, OK member Christian Williamson.

RESULTS:

Palmer Flight: Del City, OK player Travis Klein pulled out his second win on tour this season by a single stroke over Chris Blankenship from Stigler, OK and Fort Hood, TX traveler Jacob Morton.

Senior Palmer Flight: Jimmy Westfall from Oklahoma City, OK birdied the final hole to double up the 2nd win stat for the day by a single stroke over Roland Lewis from Tulsa.  Lewis carded his fourth runner up spot on the year with Drumright, OK member Clayton Badger rounding out the top three.

Hogan Flight:  Coming off a T3 at the Red River Challenge Major last weekend at Winstar, Owasso, OK member Greg Rader recorded three birdies on the day to outlast a pair of second place finishers.  Clifford Whittington from Kansas, OK and Yukon, OK member Jason Conner finished three strokes back.

Senior Hogan Flight:   Mike Johnson from Tahlequah, OK recorded his first win on the year with Joe Bonaparte of Watts, OK and Checotah, OK resident Bruce Callich knotted in the second spot just one stroke back.

Sarazen Flight:  Enid, OK traveler John Kang methodically punched his ticket to the National Championship with his third win on tour.  Kang played the back nine in one over par for the two stroke advantage over Christian Williamson from Edmond, OK.  Blanchard, OK member Jerime Parker rounded out the top three a single stroke behind Williamson.

Snead Flight:  Two in a row for Broken Arrow, OK local Nick Silk over the pair of Fort Smith, AR travelers  Chris Smith and Vicki Lynch.  Silk played the first four holes even par, struggled with the evil five but outlasted Smith to win by four strokes.
