Battle Creek Open - Recap

Tis the Season for Ice Towels!

Scott R Chilcutt, Broken Arrow, OK (June 18, 2011) The last time the Am Tour paid a visit to Battle Creek Golf Club in Broken Arrow was on May 30, 2009.  The Tulsa / Battle Creek Event # 7, nine players signed up and Roland Lewis won a combined Championship/Palmer/Hogan flight with an 8 over par, 80.  Jason Connor shot a 79 to win the Sarazen/Jones/Snead flight.

When we took over the Oklahoma Tour in 2010, we vowed to make things different and one of those changes was to mix up the golf courses.  Battle Creek didn't make the cut.  After much of the local courses ran into winter kill in early 2010, Battle Creek stepped up to replace a great deal of the courses turf and we set our eyes back on the Broken Arrow track.  That work didn't disappoint, the course was in great condition.

Player count - times 4;  Flights - times 3; Best Score - minus 9;

Bill McConnell from Norman ran away with the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Labor Finders award, with a net 61.   Chris Blankenship, Mike Johnson, Joe Bonaparte and Mike Delloro knotted up the runner up position.

Next up, The Oklahoma Tour resumes play on July 9th at the Clary Fields Classic and the Dallas Tour heads to exclusive Las Colinas Country Club for the Las Colinas Championship on Monday, July 11th.   Registration for both events close on July 1.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Jeff Boyer from Oklahoma City, took his 3rd title of the year and jumped into 2nd spot in the Callaway Order of Merit points on a 3 over par 75 with three birdies.  Tulsa's Douglas Duke finished in the runner up spot with Curt Howard one stroke behind Duke after finding trouble on the 18th hole.

Palmer Flight:  Bill McConnell from Norman shot a tournament low round one under par 71.  Oklahoma City's, Jimmy Westfall stayed within 1 stroke of McConnell through 10 holes but couldn't keep up with birdie barrage on the back nine where Bill finished the final 11 holes in 4 under par. Roland Lewis finished in the show position.

Hogan Flight:   After 5 wins on the 2010 season, Stigler, OK resident Chris Blankenship has had a long dry spell that finally broke on Saturday. Blankenship shot his Am Tour low round on 4 birdies, ending the day at three over par 75.  Panama native and new tour member Mike Delloro now living in Durant made his presence known just two back.  Delloro parred out the final 7 holes to stay ahead of Tahlequah's, Mike Johnson finishing just one stroke back.

Sarazen Flight:  Alan Barnett of Cheyenne, OK and Pawhuska's David Price took two extra holes to break the tie at the top.  In the end, Barnett wound up with his second win of the season.   Stan Wilson from Jones and Norman's Terry Saxon tied for the 3rd spot.

Jones Flight:  Loyd Welch from McAlester, OK cruised to his 2nd win of the season with his Am Tour career low round.  Jay Williams from Van Buren, AR finished in the runner up spot for the second event in a row edging out Roger Johnson from Owasso by a stroke and Lewisville, TX resident Ron Hardy by two strokes.
